Reasons to Quit your Dream Job

In 2018, with so many career options and so few available jobs, it’s becoming increasingly hard to find a job you love. So, once you find ‘the one’  you would never consider leaving, right?

We all love being comfortable in our jobs and maintaining a sustainable work life balance, and while loving your job sounds like the ultimate goal, they say a change is as good as a holiday.

Here are a few reasons people who love their job might decide to move onto something new.

  1. Work-life balance: Loving your job is one factor in maintaining a balanced lifestyle, but if you love your job so much you are missing out on other things like family or social events, your work-life balance is going to fall apart. It may feel like it’s just one event here or there but eventually, when you’re seeing your colleagues more than your family and friends, it may be time to re-evaluate and search for something more suitable.
  2. Family commitments: Your family should always come first, no matter how much you love your job. This sometimes means as little as taking the day off for a soccer carnival but it could mean something as serious as moving interstate to assist your sick or elderly parents for months at a time. This can be a difficult decision, especially if your role can’t be fulfilled remotely and your position can’t be held, but at the end of the day almost all of us would choose family over our jobs and that’s totally ok.
  3. Moving on: What’s the point of working hard if you don’t get to treat yourself? As humans, we are curious about other cultures and countries. Travelling or moving abroad can enrich your life in ways that work can’t. You can always find a job you love somewhere else in the world. It won’t be the same but it might be even better.
  4. More money: Last but not least, the reason we all keep striving to keep and grow in our roles, money. Having a job you love but earning less than you are entitled too can make you resentful of your job and your boss. Don’t let anyone sell you short. Apply for that job with a higher salary and you might find you love that as well.

So if the fear of leaving a job you love is holding you back, remember you might find one you love even more that ticks all the right boxes. Don’t be afraid to keep your eye out for something new. Your dream job might only be an application away.
