Simply put, leaders are people who make things happen. But, what makes a good leader? Passion? Bravery? Communication? The truth is, being a good leader is a combination of these factors, but it’s never an exact science. The key to being a great leader is having some core qualities and being able to adapt and evolve to any situation.
So, what core qualities should you possess if you want to excel in leading your team to success?
First, inspire by example
To fully understand the people you lead and how you should lead them, you need to do the work they do. A good leader does not expect his team to follow him merely because he says so. Your team should be inspired to follow you. If you want to become a better leader, show your staff you know what you’re talking about and mirror the qualities you want to see in them.
Be bold, be brave
One of the key traits of a great leader is courage. Bravery comes in many forms, the courage to risk it all, the strength to stare down non-believers and the fearlessness to take career risks and make the uneasy decisions.
Let go and trust
Delegation is one of the most important skills for a leader to possess. Many leaders see delegating as losing control. Incorrect, delegation is less about losing control and more about enabling the most intelligent, capable, committed people to contribute to your businesses success. In order to delegate effectively, you need to trust yourself, that you’ve hired the right staff, with the right skills that can accomplish their tasks.
Passion is powerful
As Steve Jobs once said, “People with passion can change the world”. Naturally, people want to follow a passionate leader. Passion takes many forms, passion for projects, passion for your industry and a passion for results. If you’re not passionate about your ideas, nobody else will be.
Communication is the key
Another significant trait of a great leader is the ability to effectively communicate. Good leaders should provide their team with opportunities for one-on-one communication. Showing a genuine interest in your staff and their concerns ensures your staff members feel comfortable making suggestions and they receive the recognition they deserve.
Acknowledge effort
Reward exceptional work when you see it, everyone appreciates their hard work being recognised. Acknowledging your team members and offering rewards is one of the most effective ways to keep staff happy and motivated. It’s widely accepted that happier staff perform better, therefore, acknowledging effort is going to benefit the whole business.
Becoming a great leader doesn’t happen overnight, it takes a consistent commitment to improving your leadership skills and a stern belief in your product, your business and your team. As a great leader can be an inspiration for those who work for you.
