The Silence Between Updates: Why Honest Communication in Recruitment Matters

Right now, I’m working on a number of recruitment projects — some of which have been running for months. That in itself is not unusual. Finding the right talent for a business often involves multiple stakeholders, shifting priorities, and careful decision-making.

But what I continue to grapple with is the silence that can stretch for weeks between updates. As someone who prides themselves on communication and transparency, this lack of clarity makes me feel like I’m letting down both my candidates and my own business.

Why Delays Happen

Recruitment is rarely linear, and there are valid reasons why updates can take time:

  • Internal processes: Businesses often need multiple approvals or sign-offs before moving forward.
  • Changing priorities: Hiring needs can shift quickly due to budgets, restructures, or market conditions.
  • Fear of miscommunication: Some leaders prefer not to share progress until a decision is final, concerned about backtracking later.
  • Capacity pressures: Internal HR and talent teams are often stretched thin, which can push communication further down the list.

These reasons are understandable — but silence can unintentionally create frustration and uncertainty.

The Impact on Candidates and Partnerships

For candidates, weeks without communication can feel disheartening. They are left questioning whether they are still being considered, or whether they should move on. For recruiters, the lack of updates creates a gap that damages trust and can reflect poorly on the brand we represent.

As a recruiter and business owner, I’ve built my reputation on open, timely communication. When I cannot provide updates, it feels like I’m letting down both the candidate experience and the strength of my client partnership.

Why Transparency Matters

Honest communication doesn’t need to be complicated. Even a simple, “We’re still waiting on internal approvals,” or “The process is taking longer than expected” provides reassurance. Transparency shows respect for the candidate’s time, reinforces the recruiter-client relationship, and demonstrates the professionalism of the business.

Moving Forward Together

Recruitment is most effective when approached as a true partnership between client, recruiter, and candidate. That partnership is strengthened when there is trust — and trust is built on communication.

As business owners, recruiters, and hiring managers, we all benefit when we keep each other informed. Transparency, even when there isn’t much progress to share, is what keeps the process human, professional, and respectful for all involved.
